MOVES FITNESS CREATOR RETURNS TO GUILDFORD TO PRESENT CLASS
GUILDFORD
Olympian Cindy Gilbert, whose desire to bring choreographed aerobics movement into personal fitness
resulted in the formation of Moves Fitness, returns to Guildford on Monday, 8 October to present
a prestigious Moves Fitness Master Pin to Wendy Marshall.
The class will begin at 7:30 p.m. St. Thomas of Canterbury School, Horseshoe Lane West, Merrow,
Guildford. The event is open to all interested people, as well as regular practitioners.
Gilbert, who high-jumped as a young teenager in the 1972 Olympics, will co-facilitate a
Moves Fitness class with Marshall as part of a month-long tour of England.
For more than a quarter century, Moves Fitness has been a hit for thousands of participants
throughout the country.
“Wendy Marshall puts more fun and energy in an exercise class that you will find anywhere,”
Gilbert said. “Those looking for an excellent group exercise leader will be delighted by her.
It will be my honour to give this very deserving Moves Fitness teacher the Master Teacher Pin.
She is one of our best!”
“We’re teaching a class with classic favourite routines,” Marshall said, “and I’ve asked Cindy
to teach the finale with me. I’m dedicating this class to two of my students who are living
with cancer, and two others who are cancer survivors. We’re donating proceeds from the class and
a raffle we’re holding to the MacMillan Cancer Centre. It will be a very special programme.
The added uniqueness is that Cindy will be here.”
The evening includes the 50-minute class, and an after-programme of drinks and nibbles and the
raffle. The winner will receive 10 free Moves Fitness classes, runner-up six free classes, and
third prize one free class.
Marshall said she will also be promoting her new teacher programme—something into which many
enthusiasts have gone after trying out and practising Moves Fitness routines.
“Moves Fitness is all about bringing the joy of getting fit into an exercise class,” Gilbert said.
“You can’t get fit unless you go to class and you won’t go to class unless it is fun, rewarding,
effective and makes you happy. Moves Fitness is all of these on one easy class.”
Moves Fitness provides steady aerobic fitness for those more interested in enjoying exercise
and overall toning than high athletic performance. Its uniqueness lies in the specific choreography
of the exercises and movements, creating a rhythm and energy that reduces injury while creating
great fun for participants of all ages.
Since its inception in 1980, Moves Fitness has grown to include 150 teachers and more than 5,000
students.
One of those teachers, Marshall, decided to become a teacher three months after her first class,
in 1998. Since that time, she has mothered two children (returning to class within four
weeks of each child’s birth) and found hundreds of students who enjoy exercising to music.
“I’m a control freak and don’t get a chance to control any other part of my life or family.
Even my children don’t do as they’re told!” she chuckled. “If I tell 20 women to put their
hands up in the air and skip ‘round the room, they do it—no questions asked. Now that’s control!
“Really, I'd been going to a variety of aerobic dance classes for about 12 years and always
wondered what it would be like to stand up on stage. When my Moves Fitness teacher announced one
day that there was a recruitment drive and called for new teachers, I made myself known.
I was at a low in my relationship and cheesed off with my job, and thought it would be a good diversion.
Wow! If I'm not a good advert for how to convert low self-esteem into success, then who is?”
