MOVES FITNESS CREATOR VISITS TOLWORTH FOR BREAST CANCER FUNDRAISER, PRESENTATION
TOLWORTH
Olympian Cindy Gilbert, whose desire to bring choreographed aerobics movement into personal fitness
resulted in the formation of Moves Fitness,
will visit Tolworth on Sunday, 23 September to present
a prestigious Moves Fitness Master Pin to instructor Helen Williams and participate in a
fundraiser for
Breast Cancer Care.
The activities will coincide with a special class that Williams, Gilbert and other Moves Fitness
instructors will teach. It takes place from 10 a.m.-12 Midday at Tolworth Girl’s School,
Fullers Way North in Tolworth.
“Tolworth is where Moves Fitness started in 1981,” Gilbert said. “Many in the area will
remember when classes were 400-strong and the queue to get in the car park went down the street.”
In 2006, at its annual Awards and Fundraising event, Moves Fitness raised £14,000 for Breast Cancer Care.
The cause is particularly important to Williams, Moves Fitness’ longest-serving instructor,
who is celebrating her 25th anniversary teaching classes.
Williams underwent breast cancer surgery in September 2005.
“Breast Cancer Care was the charity that gave me information and such tremendous support when
I needed it,” she said. “I would like to help BCC reach the 44,000 women and men who face the
diagnosis of breast cancer every year.”
Reaching people is not a problem for Williams, who has touched the lives of thousands as a Moves
Fitness instructor. “I’ve taught females and males, in all age groups; from children in Mini Moves
classes, to seniors in Senior Moves classes, and helped them keep fit and healthy.
Many students have been with me all this time; we’ve gone through life together!” she said.
“Helen Williams is one of the most honoured fitness instructors in Surrey,” Gilbert said.
“She has won the Top Teacher award in Moves Fitness numerous times and made a giant contribution
to her community. This special fundraising class will give those who attend a chance to see on of
the best exercise specialists/entertainers in action plus make a difference in the lives of people
affected by breast cancer. What a winning day!”
Gilbert, who high-jumped as a young teenager in the 1972 Olympics, will co-facilitate the
Moves Fitness class with Williams as part of a month-long tour of England.
For more than a quarter century, Moves Fitness has been a hit for thousands of participants
throughout the country.
“Moves Fitness is all about bringing the joy of getting fit into an exercise class,” Gilbert said.
“You can’t get fit unless you go to class and you won’t go to class unless it is fun, rewarding,
effective and makes you happy. Moves Fitness is all of these on one easy, 50-minute class.”
Moves Fitness provides steady aerobic fitness for those more interested in fun exercise and
overall toning than high athletic performance. Its uniqueness lies in the specific choreography
of the exercises and movements, creating a rhythm and energy that reduces injury while creating
great fun for participants of all ages.
Since its inception in 1980, Moves Fitness has grown to include 150 teachers and more than 5,000 students.
“I still remember attending my first Moves Fitness class as a very unfit student;
it was the first exercise I had ever enjoyed, and I was blown away by the fun I’d had!” Williams said.
“The ‘Go For The Burn, No Pain, No Gain’ aerobics fad had just started; but Moves Fitness was very
different.
The non-competitive, friendly, fun atmosphere survives, but Moves Fitness has evolved
into a fantastic exercise-to-music class that keeps students at all levels of fitness energised
and healthy. I love being able to use music from the 80’s to the present, and the inspirational
choreography keeps us motivated and enthusiastic.
And I love seeing the sparkle and joy in the face of a new student…just like me all those years ago!”
Added Gilbert, “It is great to be back to where it all started. I look forward to seeing many familiar
faces and getting the chance to personally thank people for making Moves Fitness the most popular
exercise class in Surrey over the past two decades.”
