The
History of Moves Fitness The Happiest April Fools Joke Ever! It was April 1st 1981.
Pauline Bexon gathered 12 of her friends for their first
"keep fit" class. The week prior, feeling unfit and wanting
to offer something special for the mother-toddler group she organised,
Pauline went to the local Kingston Council and asked if there was anyone
who could lead an exercise class. Unaccustomed to such a request, civil
servant, Mr. John Duffy, would normally have said no. But as it happened,
only the day before, Cindy Gilbert, an Olympic athlete training
in his borough, had come in and asked if there was anything she could
to do help promote exercise in Kingston. Mr. Duffy put the two women
in contact and the first class was scheduled. Within four weeks, the news of this amazing exercise class had spread. Instead of 12 women exercising in the local church hall, there were over 300 women exercising in the local sports hall. Pauline and Cindy knew they had something special. With a pact of friendship and entrepreneurial spirit, the two women formed Moves Fitness. The friendship and the spirit have remained intact for more than 20 years. Cindy is in charge of all education, programme design and choreography and Pauline runs the Moves Fitness office. With more than 100 teachers and 6,000 students, the company ethos of friendship, fun and delightful exercise continues today.
